Girly Girls Weekend

Delia and I started our fun weekend together on Friday with the Relay for Life, an annual event put on by the American Cancer Society to raise money for cancer research. I'd never participated, but I signed up to help the Starkville Chamber's team. Each team is supposed to have a member walking on the track from 5pm to midnight, so we signed up for an early shift.

There were tents set up all around the track and it was really a lot like a big tailgate. Everyone had food for sale, and all money went to a good cause.

Delia was all decked out!

Her boyfriend Silas, from her class, was there!

The first lap is walked by cancer survivors and is really cool to see. However, they didn't start walking until around 7pm, and Delia was already rubbing her eyes, so we left right after we watched them make their lap. My friend Kristi (in the green) was in the survivors group! She wrote a book about her experience with cancer and you can get it here on Amazon!

Go Kristi Go!!

There is a ceremony at 10pm where they light luminaries in honor of loved ones. I got one for my friend Erica's dad, David, and one for Gery Cummings, who was on our church's website committee with me. He just passed away in the past month. Even though we couldn't stay until 10, my PR intern Ellen was writing a story on the event and she got some pictures for us. And, the ladies at the luminary table pulled David's for us to see before we left.

This is a close up of the luminaries, which stretched all the way around the track. Really neat. I will definitely participate in the Relay next year.

On Saturday we got up and went to the farmers market after the rain stopped. There isn't much produce there yet, but there were lots of pretty tomato and pepper plants. I only had $10 and I spent it on a jar of homemade granola (which Delia tried and loved) and 2 bars of handmade goat milk mint soap (which Delia loved to hold). Then we ran to Kroger to get ingredients for homemade ice cream, which we signed up to bring to the young adults' church picnic. Delia saw a woman coming out of Kroger pushing the buggy that looks like a red race car and started freaking out. I had to stalk the woman to her car and put Delia in it after she got her groceries (and kid) out of it.

I made 2 batches of ice cream while Delia napped. That should have been easy, but one of my recipes made way more than my little 1-quart ice cream maker held, and a lot of ingredients somehow ended up on the counter and the floor. Our church owns a lake about 4 miles from the church building and that's where we had our cookout. There was a big pavilion with lots of tables, a huge grill, and running water!

There's Delia's boyfriend Silas again! Sharing is not Delia's specialty and in this picture she had just shrieked for him to let go of her walking toy.I didn't get many pictures of all the other kiddos that were there - 12 I think! - because Delia was being a little clingy. In this picture, we had gone down to the water to watch some of the bigger kids catch frogs and tadpoles.

Look at that tiny ponytail! I am not good at putting Delia's hair in a rubber band. It always makes her cry. But it sure is cute! She had a good time. When we left, she was exhausted and covered in Cheeto dust and ice cream sticky. Mmm what a delicious baby! She liked that ice cream too. She held on to her ice cream cup and spoon until she fell asleep on the way home.

Mother's Day breakfast together. Delia tries very hard to use utensils to eat now. Almost...

Got it!

Hanging out after church. Delia loves to wear anything of mine: shoes, watch, bracelets, headband...

"Is it straight?"

She is a very girly girl and loves her shoes, hair bows, and new outfits. One morning she brushed her hair with her toothbrush all the way to day care.

Oops. Less than ladylike.

Sweet patootie.

It quit raining long enough for us to go on a quick Mother's Day outing to Barnes & Noble. It's so nice, I just like to walk around in there sometimes.

Delia found some books already on the floor that she could stack and re-stack.

We went to the kiddie corner and read a teeny book at a teeny table.

And we rode the escalator up and down 4 times!

Grady is on the Road!

Grady left Thursday for his annual storm chase trip. The weather doesn't look too promising (as in, no good - bad? - storms), so if you live in the mid-West, be prepared for a van full of thirsty meteorologists to drop in.

You can track their progress on this storm spotter website (their username is "Wuff"): http://chubasco.niu.edu/chase/

I will add the link to the right-hand sidebar for easy access for the next 2 weeks.

See pictures from last year's chase here. It's going to be tough to beat last year's record of 5 tornadoes in one day!

Hoppin' Saturday

This morning I took some baby portraits for a woman whose baby, Riley, missed picture day at day care. We met on campus at 9am and the cloudy day made conditions pretty perfect. Later, I came back with Delia - I wouldn't have been able to sleep at night if I didn't get a picture of Delia in those roses in front of MSU's library.

Here is one of my favorites of baby Riley. While I was taking pictures, Grady and Delia went to the opening day of the Farmer's Market. Then I took Delia to a double birthday party at a local park with a big pavilion and playground. She slid on the slide and got a goodie bag with sunglasses and toys.

Lots of people, hamburgers, and hot dogs!

2 cakes!

Delia and our friend Klancie (mother of 5!)

Then it was home for a nap, then back to campus for photos w/Delia and Amelia.

And then lets loose!

Babies in a Wagon

We babysat Amelia Saturday evening while her parents threw a shower for some friends. The girls went for a wagon ride before baths and bed.

"Hey Amelia! Let's go cruisin'! There's a boy next door with a sweet tractor."

"Is that him in the Bob the Builder hat?"

"Hey Lake!" "He's so dreamy!"

"Helloooooo Ladies"

"Whatever. We are so not impressed."
(Delia hasn't sucked her thumb since she was 3 months old. Monkey see, Monkey do!)

First Steps!!

Delia has been walking with help for a while now, but as soon as you let go of her hands, she stops short like her feet are glued to the ground.

Grady's student brought over her new puppy for Delia to play with. Still no walking.

She'd rather sit and play.

Two cute babies in pink.

Thursday after work we went to happy hour at Grumpy's - a great walk-up restaurant near downtown with awesome BBQ sandwiches and chili cheese fries. A recent restaurant review called it "an upscale picnic." They have a nice deck with lots of tables and umbrellas, a grassy lawn, and last but not least, a giant TV that is always playing ESPN.

While Delia was waiting for her chicken sandwich, she took 3 real steps! The manager loved that! He took her picture to put up on the wall, gave us a t-shirt, and ice cream!

Delia's Dress, Miller's Collar

Thank you Grandma Amanda for the new outfits you sent Delia in the mail!

Delia models her new dress, shoes courtesy of the Nolan cousins!

She still refuses to walk on her own at 15 months old!

Guess what. Miller is still climbing the fence and getting out. The neutering helped, but Buddy recently remembered how much he likes to chew Miller's electric fence collar, which destroys the box that holds the batteries, rendering it useless.

Grady did some research online and found a type of "chew guard" for these types of collars. Unfortunately, the company is not selling them any more. So Grady manufactured his own using sheet metal scrap and a Dremel.

Miller models his new collar.

When we got home from work today, it appeared to be untouched...
Stay tuned...

Super Fun Saturday!

This weekend was a huge weekend in Starkville: Super Bulldog Weekend, which is pretty much Homecoming for Baseball, AND the Cotton District Art Festival, both of which easily draw tens of thousands of people. Personally, if I were MSU Athletics and/or the City of Starkville, I would have done my best to schedule these 2 events on different weekends so as to maximize the economic impact on the city, but I digress.

It was cool and drizzly that morning, but the sun came out and made it a really nice day.

There were tons of artist tents with paintings, ceramics, photography. Then there was my favorite row: the restaurant competition tents! We tried citrus-chicken sandwiches, sliders, and chicken and steak kabobs.

Here is Ryan tackling the biggest box of ribs I've ever seen, while Brandy shows off 6-week-old Will.
A dog walking service? Nope, just some friends of ours with a million dogs.

Apparently, this kid likes dogs too. (As the beagle looks wistfully at the Budweiser.)

Fun times with Mommy!

After the Art Festival, we went to Amelia's 1st birthday party!

Carmen had the house looking so cute, with giant flowers and butterflies everywhere.

What a sweet family!

Carmen's mom made this amazing strawberry cake that was soooooo good.

YAY! Presents!

Amelia kisses the tiger puppet that we gave her.

Amelia got a beautiful snow globe from her mom and dad.

The girls!

Delia and a Ducky.

Amelia's cake! I'm jealous.

Before...

...After!

Delia and I both loved the cake and ice cream. Great party Amelia!

Just for Fun

My Mammaw asked me to post a link to some wedding photos that I took in March for a family that goes to our church. It was my first real paying wedding gig. I borrowed a fantastic Nikon D300 for the occasion - my camera wouldn't have been able to get the indoor shots with the low lighting. Super fun job... champagne and sausage balls while you work?! Grady put together the website!

Mammaw: Take the mouse, move your cursor and click HERE. It should take you to the wedding photo website automatically. There are 7 different categories/albums. When you click on one image, it will take you to that gallery. Then you can click on any image to make it bigger, THEN you can click the "NEXT" button to click through them all.
